On Repeat: Kendrick Lamar – Swimming Pools (Drank)

An absolute must-listen; the second single from Kendrick’s upcoming ‘good kid, m.A.A.d city’ LP

This morning, I’ve got Kendrick Lamar playing on repeat. This track is from his upcoming album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, set for release on Monday, October 22 and you can join the official countdown at kendricklamar.com.

Swimming Pools (Drank) is the follow-up single to The Recipe (feat. Dr. Dre), lifted from Kendrick’s upcoming major studio album release entitled and stylised, good kid, m.A.A.d city.

I love Kendrick’s cool rap flow and the ability he has to fluidly switch pace, inserting a a flurry of lyrics and often contrasting it with his Compton drawl on the hook. He recently won the award for Lyricist of the Year at 2012 BET Hip Hop Awards and rightly so.

He has a way of expressing what he wants to say, what he sees is wrong with the world but in a way that makes the listener really listen up. It’s as though you’re listening to him muse as he takes you on his journey of thought, set to smooth instrumentals on his independent album release, Section.80.

Kendrick says new album, good kid, m.A.A.d city, will sound nothing like Section.80. “I couldn’t tell you what type of sound or where I’ma be in the next five years as far as music. It’s a big difference from the next project compared to the last and that’s what happened with this album.

“Going back to the neighbourhood and going to different spots, chilling with my homeboys, put me back in that same space where we used to be, bringing back them thoughts, reminiscing how I was feeling. I got myself right back in that mode and I got inspired by that. So this album won’t sound like Section.80. Completely nothing like it.”
